By the end of the first week, authorities were overwhelmed with reports from sheepherders and ranch workers in the hills east of Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. It was impossible for them to follow up on every story, and many, if not most, were considered dubious, as one officer explained to local reporters: “These men of the mountains are, many of them, dreamers; some of them suffering from what is commonly known as ‘Shepherds Delight,’ and allow their imagination to form theories, which to them soon seem realities. In this chase in the mountains the efforts of the officers are obstructed by these unreliable yarns.”

Early on the morning of Wednesday, June 3, Oscar Parker, the fellow who had first encountered Dunham at Smith’s Creek the day after the murders, anxiously rode his horse into San Jose to report a new piece of information. He arrived at the county jail around 11:00 a.m. In hushed tones, he related his new story to Undersheriff S.G. Benson. He’d learned that on the night of the murder, or possibly the day after, someone had stolen a loaf of bread from Sam Kitman’s cabin on the Hubbard ranch, twelve miles north east of Alum Rock. Also on Saturday, ashes from a small fire were found nearby, along with some obscure footprints in the area. The officers filed Parker’s story among hundreds of other reports. With his civic duty completed and relieved of his burden, Parker rode back to Smith’s Creek. A week later, Parker was wanted by police after being accused of assaulting a man he had caught fishing on the Morrow ranch.
